November 18, 2009 Forty-four ladies and one gentleman were handed their certificates of completion from four Adult Education courses conducted in the community of Salisbury during a November 10th ceremony. The event, attended by the Permanent Secretary from the Ministry of Community Development, Culture, Gender Affairs and Information, Mrs. Allport; National Director of Child Fund International Mr. Francis Joseph, Mrs. Martha Andre and Cyrille Thomas of the Adult Education Department, as well as others, gave the participants the opportunity to display their skills.
The 45 individuals completed courses in Hair Dressing facilitated by Ms Percella Andrew, Smocking Making by Ms Theresa Carbon, Pastries by Mrs. Maurina Sebastian and Computing Skills by Mrs. Donna Ambo. In his feature address, Joseph of Child Fund International complimented the participants for their tenacity. He echoed comments made by Mrs. Andre, encouraging thecourse participants to continue making strides towards their own development, as individuals, and as parents.
Joseph underscored some ill-effects of poor parenting, and advised parents to “get your children involved in the things you do at home.” He emphasised on the importance of community development. "It is possible to place greater emphasis on the historical and agricultural significance of Salisbury, and as a result, generating greater interest and economic development," Joseph noted. Participants gave testimonies of how the courses impacted on their lives.
Mrs. Euraldine Victor expressed gratitude towards Fr. Dave Conway and Andy Trew of the Canterbury Center, who facilitated the donation of the computers used during the Computing Skills Course. That program was held at the First Baptist Church.
Pastor of the First Baptist Church Mr. Pat Vidal, Elder of the Gospel Hall Church Mr. Warrington and many other persons were thanked for their instrumental involvement in ensuring that the courses materialised. Victor noted that the courses could not have been conducted in the absence of their assistance.
